Irving Stone's *The Passion of the Mind* (New American Library) is a biography, not of a single person, but of the human mind itself. It's a sweeping account of the history of psychology and psychiatry, exploring the evolution of our understanding of the human psyche from ancient times to Stone's own era. Instead of focusing solely on famous figures, Stone weaves a narrative tracing the development of key concepts and theories, highlighting the contributions of numerous thinkers and practitioners. The book likely explores the various schools of thought, debates, and breakthroughs that shaped the field, creating a comprehensive, if somewhat chronologically-driven, overview of the subject. The "passion" in the title reflects the intense intellectual and emotional energy dedicated to understanding the complexities of the human mind throughout history.
